The
Running Room Ltd. was established March 1976 at
819 Kapahulu Avenue in Honolulu, Hawaii. The founder saw a need for a place
where runners could hang out, talk story, and find the right equipment.
He started a low-key running pro shop modeled after a popular local surf
shop. Kapahulu Avenue was chosen because of its proximity to the University
of Hawaii and Kapiolani Park, the center of running in Honolulu then and
now. |

| When the store first opened, it carried Nike, Tiger, New Balance, and Adidas running shoes. At that time, the price of Nike's best shoe, the Waffle Trainer, was $29.95. The store also sold private label Running Room shorts. There was very little other running apparel available at that time. During the running boom of the late 1970's and early 1980's the Running Room became the premier specialty running store in the Pacific. | ||||
| In 1978 the Running Room moved to 559 Kapahulu Avenue, where it operated until the end of 1991. The Running Room then moved to a bigger location, 768 Kapahulu Avenue. | ||||
| In November 1996, the Running Room moved to its current location at 819 Kapahulu Ave. Although it bears the same address as the first store, its present location stands a few feet away from its original foundation. The Running Room today is still the place where runners can hang out, talk story and find the right equipment. | ||||
